
Why I Stopped Using Hot Air for BGA Work
Ever tried pulling a BGA chip off a smartwatch board? It’s a nightmare. You’re basically fighting a war against a tiny piece of fiberglass and a mountain of components packed way too close together. Most people just reach for the hot air station. But here’s the problem: air is honestly pretty bad at moving heat. It’s clumsy. You’re basically trying to push heat through an air gap, and it doesn’t always get where it needs to go.
The secret is in the waves
That’s where infrared (IR) comes in. Instead of blowing hot wind around, IR lamps send out electromagnetic waves. These waves don’t just sit on the surface; they actually soak into the board and shake up the molecules inside. Think of it this way. Hot air hits the top of the chip and kind of bounces off. IR goes deeper. It hits the solder balls underneath the package at the same time it hits the top. This is huge because it stops that dreaded “popcorn effect” where the chip bubbles or cracks because one side got hotter than the other.
No more “flying” capacitors
We’ve all been there. You’re blasting a chip with hot air, and suddenly a tiny 0201 capacitor decides it wants to go for a swim across the workbench. It’s frustrating. Hot air is turbulent. It creates cold spots and weird gusts that can knock small parts right off the board. IR is different. It’s a steady, uniform soak. You get a consistent heat across the whole footprint without the risk of blowing your board apart.
It’s not magic, though
Now, IR isn’t perfect. You have to keep a few things in mind. Colors matter. A black component will soak up that IR heat way faster than a shiny silver shield. Plus, if you’re working on a board with thick copper ground planes, you can’t just rush it. You need to give it some “soak time” to let the heat migrate through the board. If you get impatient and crank the wattage too high too fast, you’re asking for trouble. You might warp the board or even delaminate the PCB. It takes a bit of a feel for the ramp-up speed, but once you nail it, it’s a much smoother ride.
