
Stop Your IR Lamps From Burning Out
If you’ve spent any time in a soldering environment, you know the drill. Solder fumes and dust are basically poison for infrared heating lamps. They settle on the quartz tube, create these nasty hotspots, and then—pop—your tube burns out way sooner than it should. It’s a pain, it’s expensive, and it kills your uptime. We found a way to stop it. We basically built a “shield” of air right into the heating module.
How the air curtain actually works
Think of it like a wall of wind. We blast a steady stream of filtered air between the lamp and whatever you’re soldering. Because the air is moving fast and pushing outward, the fumes can’t get through. They just bounce off. This keeps the quartz tube spotless, which means your heat stays consistent and your lamps actually last.
The tricky part: Balancing air and heat
Getting this right isn’t just about blowing air; it’s about the geometry. If the nozzle is too close, it blocks the heat from hitting your workpiece. Too far? The air curtain collapses and the fumes sneak back in. It’s a delicate balance. And here’s a heads-up: that air curtain does cool the lamp down a bit. It’s great for preventing overheating, but it can dip your effective temperature. You’ll probably want to bump up the wattage or tweak your duty cycle to make up for that lost heat.
Getting it onto your shop floor
We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You shouldn’t have to rebuild your whole line to use them. We added reinforced brackets because air blowers can vibrate, and nobody wants a rattling machine. One last thing—**keep your air supply dry.**If there’s moisture in your lines, you’ll get spots on the quartz, which pretty much defeats the whole purpose of the curtain. Stick with 0.3 micron filtration and you’ll be golden.
