Nobody likes the sound of glass snapping. It’s frustrating, it’s expensive, and it usually happens right when you think you’ve got the process dialed in. The culprit? Thermal gradients. Basically, when one part of your glass is way hotter than the part right next to it, the tension builds up until the piece just gives way. In a tight, non-standard bending furnace, this is a nightmare. If your heating elements don’t hug the curve or fit into those awkward narrow gaps, you end up with cold spots. And cold spots are where the cracks start.
Fitting the Heat to the Machine
Most off-the-shelf lamps are straight. But your furnace isn’t always a perfect rectangle. When you try to force a straight lamp into an irregular layout, you get gaps. We get around this by building infrared lamps that actually fit your specific machine. If you need a precise radius for a curve or a weird length to fit a cramped chassis, we make it. The goal is simple: keep the heat source the same distance from the glass at every single point. We also crunch the numbers on wattage per centimeter. This stops that annoying “zebra stripe” effect where some areas get blasted with heat while others barely get warm.
The Balancing Act: Power vs. Heat
We use high-purity quartz for the envelopes because they can handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly without popping. If you’re doing some really high-intensity work, we can even add coatings to tweak how the heat hits the glass. But here’s the thing: you have to be careful with power density. If you cram a massive amount of wattage into a tiny, short lamp just because you’re short on space, you’re asking for trouble. You risk frying the lamp ends. Plus, your cooling fans and vents have to be up to the task of clearing out that extra ambient heat around the sockets, or you’re just trading one problem for another.
