
Putting Infrared Lamps in Bathrooms: How to Keep Things Safe
If you’re planning to put infrared heating lamps in a bathroom, you’ve got to change how you think about electrical insulation. Bathrooms are brutal. Between the steam and the humidity, moisture finds a way to settle on every surface, and that’s a recipe for leakage currents or—even worse—a short circuit.
Sealing the Gaps
The real danger usually hides at the termination points. That’s where the heating element meets the lead wires, and it’s almost always where things go wrong. To stop water vapor from sneaking into the electrode, we use a combination of high-temp ceramic insulators and silicone-based potting compounds. It basically creates a watertight seal that can handle the heat. You also have to be obsessive about dielectric strength. In a bathroom, your fixtures need to handle voltage spikes without flinching. We build these to ensure there’s zero leakage, even when the outer casing is dripping with condensation.
Picking Materials That Actually Last
Quartz glass is great for the heat, but the mounting hardware is what really takes the beating from the humidity. Here’s the thing: if you use standard steel, it’ll rust. Eventually, that rust eats away at your grounding path, and suddenly you’ve got a problem. That’s why we stick to corrosion-resistant alloys for the brackets and reflectors. Then there’s the wiring. It needs to survive a constant cycle of getting hot and then getting damp. We use PTFE or fiberglass-sleeved wiring because it doesn’t crack or peel over time. If the sleeve fails, you’ve got live copper exposed to damp air, and nobody wants that.
The Reality of Installation
Grounding isn’t a “nice to have”—it’s a must. You have to wire these into a GFCI circuit. Even with a perfectly sealed lamp, a mechanical failure in the housing could energize the whole chassis. But wait, there’s a catch. If you seal a unit too tightly, the internal electronics can’t breathe. You end up trapping heat inside, which can actually fry the insulation materials prematurely. It’s all a balancing act: you want it waterproof, but you still need a bit of thermal venting so the wiring doesn’t burn itself out.
