
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom isn’t as simple as just slapping on a waterproof cover. You’re mixing high heat with steam and splashes—not a great combo if you aren’t careful. To get that IP44 rating, we have to make sure nothing bigger than 1mm gets inside the housing and that the whole thing can handle water spraying at it from any angle.
Dealing with Leaks and Power
Here’s the thing: when things get damp, electricity likes to wander where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use high-grade ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals. These things are tough. They keep the power where it belongs, even when the air is thick with humidity. We also use silicone-insulated wiring. Why? Because standard wires crack when they get hot and then cool down over and over. Silicone just handles the heat. And please,don’t mess around with the grounding. A “floating ground” in a wet bathroom is a disaster waiting to happen. We use reinforced lugs to bond the chassis straight to the earth. That way, if a quartz tube ever bursts, the outer shell won’t become a live wire.
The Balancing Act: Sealing vs. Breathing
Usually, IP44 protection means gaskets and drip-loops. We use heat-resistant silicone seals to keep the water out, but there’s a catch. If you seal a unit completely air-tight, you trap the heat. That’s a quick way to fry your internal wiring or melt your sockets. It’s a trade-off. We design our units with strategic drainage gaps. They’re small enough to keep splashes away from the live parts, but open enough to let the unit breathe and moisture escape.
Real-World Installation
When you’re actually wiring these in, remember that your junction box is just as important as the lamp itself. Stick with IP65-rated connectors for the external feed. One last tip: if your bathroom doesn’t have great ventilation, steam can build up and leave mineral deposits on the insulators. Over time, this can cause arcing. Every few months, just take a quick peek at the terminals. If you see salt or grime buildup, clean it off. It only takes a second and saves you a lot of headaches later.
