
Stop the Chipping: Why Infrared Preheating Just Works
Anyone who’s spent time cutting glass knows the frustration of “corner breakout.” You think you’ve got a clean cut, but then you see those jagged little chips along the edge. It happens because cold glass is stubborn. When the tool hits it, the stress creates tiny fractures that just run wild, leaving you with a mess. The fix? Warm it up first. By using infrared (IR) preheating right before the cut, we take the edge off that tension.
The secret is in the heat
Think of it like this: when you hit the surface with short-wave IR lamps, you’re basically relaxing the material. It lowers the internal stress and makes the glass less likely to snap violently. Instead of a chaotic break, you get a smooth, controlled path. The result is a much cleaner edge and way fewer rejected pieces. It’s a night-and-day difference once your surface temperature is steady.
Getting the gear right
You can’t just use any old bulb. You need high-wattage quartz halogen lamps. These give you that immediate “punch” of heat needed for a fast-moving production line. We usually go for high heat density so the glass hits the right temperature in a few seconds. But here’s the trick: you have to balance the power with your line speed. If the lamps are too hot or the glass is crawling, you’ll overheat the material. That’s a recipe for thermal shock once it hits the cooling stage. Plus, you’ll want a cooling system that can handle the ambient heat bleed, otherwise, your surrounding machinery might start warping. Nobody wants that.
Keeping it running
We build these heaters to be simple. They’re designed to drop right into the footprint of your existing annealing furnace. We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, so wiring them up isn’t a headache. We use quartz glass for the envelopes because it can take the heat without getting cloudy. Just a heads-up: these tubes hate dust. If you’re in a gritty environment, keep those reflectors clean. If they get layered in grime, your heat output will tank, and you’re right back to square one with those chipped edges.
